Rhona Wenger was born in 1957 in Lawrence, Kansas. Later childhood was spent in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; the subtleties and understatement of the prairie landscape is an important touchstone for her life.
She attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where she earned a B.A. Honours in Art History and Classical Studies (1979) and an M.A. in Art History (1985). From Kingston she moved to Peterborough where she concentrated on developing as a visual artist, first in watercolour and traditional drawing applications, later by concentrating on figure drawing, mixed media and textile arts.
Along with her practice as a visual artist, Rhona has maintained and developed her academic study of the visual arts. She received her diploma in Arts Administration from Sir Sandford Fleming College, Peterborough in 1994. Since then she has worked as Assistant Curator at the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery in Owen Sound and as Installation Officer/Curatorial Assistant at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, and, for a time, as Director/Curator of the Art Gallery of Northumberland in Cobourg, Ontario.
Rhona worked tirelessly to set up my Transient States sculpture show at the Art Gallery of Northumberland. I am grateful for her calmness and good cheer in the midst of the chaos that the organization of any new show involves. Her introduction, which appeared in the show's catalogue, is reproduced here with her permission.
